ENGLISH TRIFLE

This traditional English dessert is a crowd pleaser, with scrumptious layers of strawberries, whipped cream and custard over spongy cubes. It’s perfect for gatherings, and makes for the ideal holiday dessert!

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups sliced fresh strawberries

  • 3 packets of Dream Whip topping (or any other brand)

  • 200g cream cheese

  • 1/4 cup white sugar

  • Custard powder

  • 1 vanilla ready mix cake, cut into small cubes

  • Strawberry or mixed berries jam preserve

PREPARATION

1. First, make sure you bake the ready mix cake as per the instructions and cool down completely before cutting into small cubes.

2. While the cake is cooling down, prepare one serving of the custard powder as per the instructions on the package. If it is too thick, add a little more milk to loosen it up (1 tablespoon at a time), then take it off the heat and allow it to cool.

3. In a separate bowl, add the Dream Whip packets, cream cheese, and sugar, then beat using a handheld mixer until stiff peaks form.

4. Add a couple of tablespoons of the whipped cream to the custard after its cooled to give it an extra kick.

5. Now that you have all your trifle components, begin layering them using a trifle dish or individual cups.

6. First, you start with a layer of cake at the bottom, spread a thin layer of jam on the cake to make it more moist and flavorful, then add a layer of custard, fresh berries, and whipped cream.

7. Repeat until you’ve reached the top of the dish.

8. Garnish with whipped cream and berries and dig in!

Notes:
This is the easiest trifle you’ll make, because everything used is pre-packaged or boxed. You can, of course, choose to make everything from scratch, but this is my mother’s recipe and it is absolutely delicious, I don’t like to change a thing!

For the cake, I like to use Betty Crocker’s vanilla cake or Pillsbury’s vanilla cake.

For the custard powder, I like Foster Clark’s.

For the whipped cream powder, I use Dream Whip.
